 Sao Paulo, Brazil

The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord    of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest    field.

Update Received from Lukas 6th April 2016

Hello everyone, this is a quick article about São Paulo, from Lukas (Becky Evans Santos’ husband!). Becky and I currently live in the 5th most populated city in the world. According to a 2014 UN study, it holds more people than Mumbai, Beijing, London or New York. We are talking about a ‘city’ that holds 6.7 times more people than Wales itself!

Life in São Paulo is loud, busy and interesting. Just like many capital cities in the world, here we find people from all different places around the globe. A walk in the city centre allows you to see the interaction between South Americans and the Africans who are trying to make a living from street markets, as well as the Asians and Jews who dominate specific neighbourhoods. Life expectancy is around 74.2 years old and is one of Brazil’s highest, if not shortened by the waves of violence that the population deals with on a daily basis, or by the lack of organization in health care for its people: we see hundreds of people waiting to see doctors and queueing up in hope of much-needed surgery.

Even though São Paulo is not portrayed as a violent city, you have to watch out whenever in public transport or walking home at night. It can seem quite concerning if only considered from this perspective, but São Paulo is also the home of cultural events in Brazil, it is the wealthiest city in the country and where most jobs are concentrated.

Not to mention the ‘home’ of Brazilian football (Neymar played for one of the state local teams).

Growing up in São Paulo was quite an adventure. I am the youngest son of a local pastor and studied very far from home, which allowed me to travel around the city and see different places and people from a very young age, as well as understand how to relate to and deal with the different circumstances I faced. I lived in São Paulo until the age of 16, when I joined World Horizons (but that’s another story for another time!)

Here, in this large city, is where God allowed us to start life together as a married couple and to catch a glimpse of ‘his kingdom come’ as we work with the local church, with teenagers and youth, and in other activities - from street evangelism to one-to-one sharing of the gospel.

As I write this article, I can hear police sirens and loud shouting in our neighbourhood. Although I don’t know what’s going on, I’m praying that the Lord has got His mighty hand on the people around us.

Looking forward to writing again and giving you another taste of the Evans Santos’ in Brazil!
